Mount Rinjani Trekking Insurance
Trekking Mount Rinjani is one of Indonesia’s most rewarding adventures, but the challenging volcanic terrain, high altitude, and remote location come with inherent risks. To improve safety standards and emergency response capabilities, the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (TNGR) introduced updated insurance regulations in March 2026.
All registered trekkers must now have valid insurance coverage while inside the national park. To ensure no hiker is left unprotected, TNGR implemented a two-tier insurance system: a Basic tier included in your permit and a Premium tier for comprehensive emergency cover.
The Two Tiers of TNGR Insurance
1. Basic Trekking Insurance (Included with Permit)
Every official e-Rinjani trekking permit automatically includes basic insurance coverage. The cost is nominally built into your park entrance ticket (approximately IDR 10,000).
While it guarantees you have baseline protection, its scope is heavily restricted. It is designed to handle minor emergencies and does not cover large or expensive rescue operations.
What Basic Insurance covers:
-
Limited medical assistance.
-
Basic accident protection during the trek.
-
Manual ground evacuation by rescue teams.
-
Minimal compensation in the event of serious injury or death.
-
Crucially, it does NOT cover helicopter evacuation.
2. Premium Trekking Insurance (TNGR Official Upgrade)
To address the massive costs and logistical difficulties of high-altitude emergencies, TNGR launched the Premium Trekking Insurance. Costing IDR 290,000 (approx. USD 17–19) per person, this policy is valid for a maximum of 4 days (4 × 24 hours) from the moment you enter the trekking gate until you exit.
This policy is designed to handle worst-case scenarios—most notably, helicopter air rescues, which can mean the difference between life and death on the mountain.
Who needs to buy this? You are required to purchase this Premium tier if you do not have your own personal travel insurance, or if your personal policy does not explicitly cover high-altitude trekking (up to 3,726m) and helicopter evacuation. If your personal insurance already covers these, you simply need to provide your policy details during registration and you are exempt from the Premium fee.

The Premium tier offers significantly higher compensation limits and comprehensive rescue support.
Helicopter Evacuation Rules
Having Premium Insurance does not mean you can call a helicopter just because you are tired. TNGR has strict protocols to ensure air rescues are reserved for genuine, life-threatening emergencies.
An emergency must be officially declared by a doctor who assesses the injured visitor (often coordinating with the EMHC ground team).
Conditions eligible for helicopter evacuation include:
-
Bone fractures.
-
Head injuries.
-
Severe hypothermia or frostbite.
-
Loss of consciousness.
-
Sudden life-threatening medical events (e.g., severe heart problems).
If the doctor determines the condition is not a critical emergency, the trekker will be evacuated by land to a hospital. Furthermore, if the total cost of the helicopter evacuation exceeds the policy limit (IDR 260 million), the visitor is responsible for paying the remaining balance.
